The Calling

My grandparents grew up poor. Both came from large families and together they raised a large family. They were both Christians and they taught their children and their grandchildren to walk with the Lord as they did. They were together for fifty wonderful years. When he died she said she no longer wanted to live. One week after his passing, she went into the hospital, her body beaten down with emphysema that had plagued her for years. Two days later, she called her children to her bedside and, unable to speak because it took too much of her breath to even try, she took her finger and she wrote his name in the air. It was her way of telling them that she wanted to go to Heaven to be with her husband. She died two days later. It was a storybook ending to a fifty year marriage to the love of her life.

I think back on my childhood and I am able to recall the countless number of times I went to my grandparents home. My grandmothers bible was most always lying on the kitchen table, and most of the time she would be sitting there reading it. She would read aloud if there was someone to listen. Sitting at her kitchen table, I heard the stories of David and Goliath and about the den of lions and about Noah and the flood.

My grandparents lived the sort of Christian life we should all desire to live. Because of how they lived, most, if not all, in my family are Christians today. It is a great tribute to their faithfulness to God.

When we walk with the Lord in the light of his word, what a glory he sheds on our way! While we do his good will, he abides with us still, and with all who will trust and obey.
