Basketball Blowout

The coach of a Texas high school basketball team that beat another team 100-0 was fired Sunday, the same day he sent an e-mail to a newspaper saying he will not apologize for a wide-margin victory when his girls played with honor and integrity. Administrators at Covenant School in Dallas Morning called the blowout against Dallas Academy shameful. A parent who attended the game said Covenant continued to make 3-pointers, even in the fourth quarter. She said spectators and an assistant coach were cheering wildly as their team edged closer to 100 points. A private christian school, Dallas Academy has eight girls on its varsity team and about 20 girls in its high school and is winless over the last four seasons. The academy specializes in teaching students struggling with learning differences.

This reminds me of an incident that happened many years ago, when girls basketball was just getting started in Kentucky and Clinton County defeated Pine Knot 102 to 6 at Albany. The teams were scheduled to play later in the season at Pine Knot. As the date for that game drew near, WANY received a letter from the Pine Knot principal, who refused to allow the radio station to broadcast the game unless it paid a fee, saying more or less, she would not allow her school and the team to be humiliated without a price. This infuriated the Voice of the Bulldogs, Sid Scott, who issued a response saying he 'would not pay to humiliate anyone.'

  1. Randy,
Reading your story involving Pine Knot basketball reminded me of a story with our good friend, Eddie Paul Coop. Thought I would share the story with you.

Years ago, when WJRS first began live broadcasts of high school basketball games (probably late 60s), Scott Hamm, a local funeral director, was doing play by play for the radio station. Russell County was playing at Pine Knot one night and our good friend and colleague for so many years, Eddie Paul Coop, was traveling with Scott to make sure the phone line was connected and the equipment was working. Basically, Eddie Paul's job was to get the game on the air and then keep stats during the game. At the old Pine Knot gym, there was a stage on side of the floor, behind the benches, no stands on that side. On the stage was a table with two folding chairs for Scott and Eddie Paul. As the game started, Scott was doing the play by play, assuming that he was "on the air" and was "live". Shortly after the game started, the referee called a foul against Russell County, which prompted Eddie Paul to let loose with several choice words!! Scott was startled, trying to keep Eddie Paul quiet, and apologized "on the air" for the comments. A few minutes later, another call was made, and Eddie Paul again had some choice words for the referee. This happened several times in the first half. At halftime, Scott was very upset and let Eddie Paul know how upset he was for his actions... Eddie Paul began laughing uncontollably and then confessed, telling Scott there was a problem with the equipment, the game was not even "on the air", and that the entire first half broadcast was a joke on Scott!! It is my understanding Scott did not speak to Eddie Paul for quite some time after this incident!!
