Dairy Treat Day in Albany

Thank you, Jesse Collins, for keeping this iconic establishment open an extra 43 years and carrying on the legacy of the famous little scrambled hamburger. What a blessing you were to our community!

Today (Oct. 3) marks 73 years since Albany Dairy Treat first opened. School, kids kept a dirt path wore down between the old Clinton County High School, which became Clinton County Middle School years later.

A burger, chips, a coke and three pieces of candy for a quarter! A lot of kids would sneak away from school, outside the normal lunch hour, and walk over there just to get a 'Greasy Burger from 'Little Brown's.'

It was on December 6, 1949, when Verner and Pearl Brown moved their family to Albany from Salem, Illinois and soon begin operating Brown’s Service Station at 109 Burkesville Road. That was in 1949. Albany Dairy Treat opened for business on October 3, 1953. The Browns operated the dairy treat until August 3, 1983.

Today also officially recognizes the anniversary of "Collins' Dairy Treat.' Jesse and Carol purchased Albany Dairy Treat from the Brown's in 1983, and while the Brown's owned it for 30 years, the Collins' family have owned it for 43 years this year.

In 2023, Mayor Steve Lawson signed a proclamation setting aside October 3rd as Dairy Treat Day in Albany, in honor of Collins Dairy Treat and Albany Dairy Treat, and so today the entire community (and beyond!) can celebrate Jesse and Carol, and Mike and Heather, and the Collins and the Brown families for allowing us to enjoy a wonderful and precious tradition in Albany, the little scrambled hamburger! What a legacy! How many can you eat? 💕

*** Jesse Collins passed away on September 29th. His funeral service will be held on Tuesday, October 6th, at 1:00 PM at Campbell-New Funeral Home in Albany. The family will receive friends beginning at 5:00 P.M. on Monday, October 5th. **
